If I recall correctly, yes. It's many years ago though, so I might not :-(
But I think the program needed you to setup the board in specific colors (and size and play-direction), then it could "read" positions.

Mochy, a colleague (and team mate) of mine, did start to make such a picture recogn. program for BG positions. He starts up a lot of projects for fun, but never finishes half of them ;-)
Anyway, the challenges for automating this completely were: Getting score, cube, dice and match-length input. A challenge is to recognize play-direction and sides, but that could be done with a relatively high probability if you have an evaluation engine at hand, looking at pip-counts, etc. contact and structure. You should be able to train a neural-net in identifying this. He got around to squaring up the board (locating the corners), and identifying the pips. (By the way, in another code-project he did train a neural net to identify and read betting odds for horse-races from a bookmaking site).
I wonder if you have done any consideration to those points, will you need manual input for points, etc. and will you need to take the picture in the right direction?
