Help understanding play

You want to win and you don't want to lose gammons here. Being hit on an open board point usually is more dangerous than being hit in the outfield. Being pointed on head obviously is bad but even a not hit back loose hit if very dangerous because being up against a strong board is now imminent. That being said, I play 21/18.

PS: A tempo hit would be cool here, but there is none.
