I recall reading that in terms of pure average caloric burn that squash was a close second to racquetball. However, when I abandoned racquetball for many years starting in the late 90s, I started playing squash. I found that it was just as strenuous and in fact more-so. However that was probably because I was so incredibly efficient at moving on the racquetball court, while I was most certainly not in squash.

Unlike squash, there is only one type of ball in racquetball.

One other difference on the serve is that a squash ball must be hit above a service line on the front wall and must bounce in a box within half the rear court. Serves in racquetball can be hit at any height and to either side of the court as long as the ball first hits the floor somewhere between half-court and the back wall; it may not hit the rear wall before bouncing.

Ideal drive serves in racquetball are hit low and hard and bounce twice before the back wall. As the drive serve is hit relatively parallel to the floor, when the serve speed exceeds about 165 mph, the ball when bouncing behaves as if it has hit a patch of ice; it literally overcomes the friction of the floor and skids.
