Just think of a case where you play a money game. You have already doubled. You are just before a critical play where you have two choices: 1) Go for gammon (0% single wins, 60% double wins, 40% single loses) 2) Go for single game (61% single wins, 39% single loses)
suppose that the next roll is so critical that the value of the cube is 0
Question: which play gives you higher equity? Which play gives you a non-lose (win) outcome?
