Question: which play gives you higher equity? Which play gives you a non-lose (win) outcome?
Ok, that was easy ;- Obviously the play that wins 60% gammons give you higher equity. And the play that wins 61% single games has the higher probability of winning a smaller amount. Similarly, I imagine one could choose an opening play with higher winning chances but, as less gammonish than the best play, lower equity. So you are quite right to point out that backgammon can offer a choice of winning/losing 2, 4 or 6 points. In that way it's similar to some of Tim's analogy games, where the probability of coming out ahead after so many games depends on the payoff structure.
However, this really isn't the kind of "error" contemplated when the thread on the value of not making errors in the opening play, is it? A twisty turny thread, to be sure ;-
