Abandoning the midpoint or playing deep into our board can't be right, so 20/16(2) seems practically forced. Then we need to play one more 4 from the back and one more 4 up front. 24/20 seems natural, but 20/16 is worth considering. It looks strange and disconnected but sometimes this is the kind of play that is correct when we have a large race deficit. It lets us hit from the 16 point without leaving a blot there and it lets us hit from the 24-point without giving up the 24-point entirely. We're not so concerned with being able to provide stepping stones for our checkers to escape as with covering all the available territory with direct shots. Also, the spare on the 16 point may give us some useful flexibility if we roll something a bit awkward next time. Nevertheless, here I think I prefer 24/20. We're not so far behind that it's crucial to hold the ace-point anchor, and the 5-point anchor is valuable for all the usual reasons. For the 4 up front, everything seems to have pros and cons. I'll choose 13/9 but this is probably not the crucial part of the decision.
