What ever you do, you are leaving a checker on the 20-point under the gun, with many points and builders aimed at it. But note that the points are stripped, and that one of the builders is a blot. And white has a strong board with high quality points. With that in mind, the correct play looks to be 24/18. In case Black points (no matter where), you'll in most have a lot of returns from the bar; and the same in case of a double hit. And if you do not hit a return hit after Black points on the 5, you may anchor up on the 18
In contrast, if you play 8/2, you are not going to have many returns at all after Black points (in most cases, you'd have zero returns), you do not have an anchor slotted, and your upfront position is weakened unless you can cover.
I guess that leaving blots on the 20 and 18 is unusual and hence easy to overlook or to dismiss as too dangerous, but it looks the right play here by a lot.
