There are only three legal plays here. Whatever you do, you're going to be leaving a lot of blots and shots. Fortunately you do have a somewhat stronger board to protect you. Therefore your first instinct should be to place checkers where you want them. 8/2 does not do this. 13/7 does have the virtue of slotting the point you need to make a 5-prime, but you don't want to be creating two extra blots in a position where it could easily lead your being gammoned, especially considering that you're ahead in the match. So 24/18 comes out by elimination. I don't know if Bill Riles would be amazed by this play since it moves a checker from safety on the 24-point into a quadruple shot firing squad, but in fact it is not as suicidal as it looks. Slotting two anchors (20 point and 18 point) increases the chances that you'll make at least one of them. You're likely to get a return shot, especially since Black may have to break one of his stripped points to hit, and you don't mind a blot-hitting contest so much since you have the stronger board.
I haven't checked a bot but I would be surprised if 24/18 is not correct. On that assumption, I guess you played 8/2. This might seem "safe" but really it just puts a checker where it is either out of play or will get sent back. You're still likely to get hit, and now your return shots will often give Black a double shot at your 2-point blot.
