The question of whether there is a clever solution to the second problem is an interesting one. I seem to recall hearing an argument that doesn't require tedious case enumeration but I am unable to reconstruct it.

By the way, these puzzles are very old and I'm not even sure they can be attributed to anyone in particular; probably several people have rediscovered them independently.
