We had a long discussion about this on rec.games .backgammon way back in 1996. Many didn't really understand the gammon price concept back then and of those that did, it seemed most were doing it Stick's way. I argued for the way Phil explained.

OK, Bob, now I think I understand your preference. It appears that your method and the one I described are equivalent (that is they come up with the same answer). The differences are operational: your's requires more memorization, mine more calculation. Flip that coin! "
