Making two home-board points in the original position is a nice play. In the modified position, apart from what Daniel says, making two home board points prepares for a hit, but then there needs to be something to hit! Making the 8, instead of having a blot there, makes the position less fragile, and you are getting less hitting chances, further pointing towards making the prime.
