Thanks, Mary. I had forgotten about the article you wrote about Danish props, and Karsten's comments in Gammon 65 on this position.

For what it's worth, I always played the "take" side -- getting a point to take a 2-cube. It's a whole lot more fun to play. Karsten's Gammon article concluded that it was a no-double in theory, a strong double in practice (since over 90% of the good players he queried thought it was a drop), and a take as a prop.

Your last paragraph maybe is more Karsten than me, although I don't remember what I told you in 2003! I'd surely give a point to a "weak" player to take. You're surely right that the position produces big swings. Takers must be prepared to lose lots of backgammons. And, of course, Karsten would have better results playing "Chuck Papazian's favorite prop" (the opening) than me.
