This is surely just an artifact of not wanting to lose your double next turn?
At DMP, one can get some other interesting variants by varying the state of White's board. It's definitely very important that White has a weak board in the given position or Blue would not be able to play so boldly. For example give White a five-point board with an open 6-point and apparently it's best to leave no shots at all, even at DMP.
