Physical disabilities

Hi Marv,
I imagine you're talking about physical abilitiy here. Age by itself shouldn't be a reason to give someone a crutch. Many "elderly" players play a top notch game. They don't need any more advantage.
Physical disabilities are another matter. Backgammon is essentially a mental contest. I think it is in the interest of the game to accomodate as many players as we can. We just have to find a way to do it that doesn't impact on the mental contest.
Here is a suggestion. If a player has a physicial disability that prevents him from easily picking up the dice, rolling the dice, or hitting the clock, he should be allowed to have an assistant perform these duties for him.
Similarly, if a player has poor vision and can't read the dice, he could have an assistant read the dice for him.
The ideal assistant is someone who doesn't know how to play backgammon. That way there is no chance the assistant would inadvertantly impart information to the player.
