Elderly players and time clocks

I'm not trying to suggest that it should never ever happen like you describe, but Marv's original post suggested one option would be to let it happen this way in the regular course of business. I think it's a very awkward situation when a player who is down to 1 minute or 5 minutes or whatever has to summon the director and ask for extra time in the middle of a match, and I think it should happen very very rarely if ever.
It's kind of the difference between applying for extra time on your final exams because you have a learning disability, and going up to the proctor with 5 minutes left saying you need extra time. Even if you have a totally legitimate reason, it's very hard to make a fair decision under those circumstances.
If we're talking about a scenario where a director watches the first game of a match and then announces he's going to grant some kind of adjustment to make the rest of the match fair, I'm not especially bothered by that. But the idea that your flag could be on the brink of falling and you could make some kind of appeal for extra time at that moment doesn't really seem to be in the spirit of competition.
