Here's my take on this position:

As you said both hits would leave the same number of return shots (21 in total - 3 of which are loose hits).

However, hitting with 54 achieves more than hitting with 43: -It creates return shots if you get hit back on your bar or 9 point. -It brings in a builder for your bar point. -It takes Double 2 away as a joker and makes double 3 less of a joker. -A minor consideration: It forces white to break the midpoint with 31 and 21, potentially offering more return shots once you re-enter.

Also, pointing with 54 uses up a builder for the bar point. Pointing with 43 doesn't have that drawback and actually uses one of the two partially dead checkers on your 6 and 5 points. The best thing they can do right now is make the point in front of the anchor.
