Phil Plait (who, btw, until a few years ago, worked for the physics department of Sonoma State Univ., less than an hour's drive from where I live) has a great website on bad astronomy. There's not much discussion of that backgammon position, but I suspect one has to take a longer view than the birth or death of this planet :)
