Although I think you have a valid point here, one has to be a little careful when trying to push this reasoning too far. No specific word can be copyrighted, but string together enough words and you get something copyrightable. Perhaps no specific backgammon position can be copyrighted—though I doubt that this statement has been rigorously tested in court—but string together enough positions and it's less clear.
