"Hockeyfan started writing ?-marks as I pondered my options. Since it was the first time during the match I deliberated over a play I was annoyed at this"

When somebody does this to me or something else that makes it clear that they want me to hurry up (as opposed to making sure I haven't lost connection or otherwise froze up), my response is: "you should go read my profile while I finish thinking about this play". They then see the nice message I've put there that tells people not to bother inviting me if they're going to be in a big hurry and will have a problem with me thinking about plays occasionally.

I commend you for having the vision to consider the alternatives here. I am almost certain that I'd have played 13/10 instantly over the board. It creates a 5-prime and trying to blitz against a 5-point board does not seem like the right idea. Get them to crack first seems like the natural thought in such a position.

But with QF here, the hit has to be considered. This is GG so all those blots don't matter, as long as it wins. We regret hitting when we are hit back with 14 numbers (though perhaps not so much with 43). Contrast that with the 11 5's we are unhappy with after not hitting (though 51 and 55 gives returns). If I knew in advance that whichever play I made, I'd be punished, which would be better? Hitting - because our opponent is still behind a 4-prime most of the time instead of out, and the non-escaping numbers are cracking numbers. The rest of the time, we've likely not given white the chance to immediately crack, but in return, he's either danced or entered deeper and we're favored to make the 4 point. But the blitz is a bit precarious and might delay cracking. So on balance, not getting hit back is likely a wash over the priming play when white fails to leap. The hit likely wins a tad more gammons, but I doubt very many.

Overall, it seems that at DMP or GG, the hit comes out ahead because getting hit back and keeping white behind the 4-prime is not as bad as having white escape.

So where's the ace? 13/12 seems better as it gives 20 returns after a 36 instead of getting hit.

6/4* 13/12
