I really think tablet computers are the future of backgammon, whether you're playing face-to-face or online. You get the benefits of both worlds. You can lay the board flat and move checkers by sliding them, just like you do with a real board. And you can record your games, just like when you're playing on a computer.
It will be interesting to see the upcoming debate about how and when electronic boards will be allowed in face-to-face tournaments. I expect the initial reaction by many will be: "No way!" After all, people have invested a lot in the current boards. And there will be concern that people playing on electronic boards will have some kind of an advantage. (At a minimum, you'll want pip counts turned off and illegal moves allowed, just like with a real board.)
But as tablet hardware and software gets better and cheaper, the attitude will change. Newcomers to the game won't bother buying wood and leather boards -- electronic boards will be easier to carry, cheaper, and just as nice to play on.
