iPad

Allowing illegal moves on an electronic board is an interesting concept. Like Daniel, I think it makes no sense. I think we tolerate illegal moves now only because of the technical difficulties involved in enforcing legal moves consistently and fairly with the traditional setup. I don't see any advantages to allowing illegal moves with an electronic board.
However, consider the issue of manual dice. Since cheating with electronic dice is probably easier than cheating with manual dice, I think people will demand manual dice. In that case, the illegal-move issue will resurface: What if I punch the wrong dice into the iPad? This should create more than enough arguments and difficulties to satisfy the fans of illegal moves.
Recording of games will also be a potential issue. People like Nack who don't want their games recorded will probably have an uphill battle to fight if backgammon goes electronic.
