If you breeze right by a D/T situation, and the next roll you get your opponent to take a D/P position, you haven't actually gained any equity, since in either scenario the same game is played to completion with your opponent holding the cube.
Of course, there are other things that could happen. You might overshoot your market, or you might roll poorly and be glad you didn't double. But one thing is for sure: when the position is D/T and you decline to double, you just lost equity. There are factors that might justify that sacrifice of equity, but the fact that your opponent might incorrectly take at some future point is definitely not one of them.
