Keene: How did the payouts break out in this format?
Rory: The payouts were to 7 places per the brochure...4 from the playoffs, 2 from the Consolation, and 1 from the last chance. The money was split 65/25/10 across the playoff, conso, & last chance. The playoff paid 55/25/10/10 and the conso paid 70/30.
Keene: Also, what were peoples feelings about the format.
Rory: Overall the players in the Intermediate loved it and the same format will be used next year with a possible tweek or two. The opinion from the Open players was much more of a mixed bag. Some people loved it, some hated it, and some just liked the fact that it was it was something new but didn't really have much of an opinion as to weather or not they liked it. Depending on a few variables that I cannot get into at this time next year's Chicago Open may be a modified Swiss.
Keene: Were there any very early qualifiers that just spent a weekend watching backgammon?
Rory: In the Open the first four qualifiers were CJC, Grunwald, O'Laughlin, & Fogerlund. They all played in some side events while waiting for the playoffs. Those side events included the Blitz, Seniors, and Doubles.
Keene: How many matches were played on average by each player?
Rory: In the Open there were 29 entrees with 4 imedeate qualifiers not eligable to rebuy. 23 of the 25 people eligable rebought at least once for a total of 67 rebuys giving us 12 playoff qualifiers in the Open. In the Intermediate there were 23 entrees with 3 imedeate qualifiers not eligable to rebuy. All 20 people eligable rebought at least once for a total of 57 rebuys giving us 10 playoff qualifiers in the Intermediate.
