Why do we need to give names to different scores?

In general, you mean? Let's address "gammon save" (GS), for example:

(1) It is shorter than saying "One away, two away, post-Crawford."
(2) It covers motivationally identical situations such as two away owning a 2-cube versus four away, and four away owning a 4-cube versus eight away, and three away owning a 4-cube versus four away, and two away owning a 4-cube versus six away.
(3) It descriptively encapsulates what the player in question is trying to do (save a gammon).
