I completely agree with no hedging MOST OF THE TIME, but when you are in a tournament that pays only the top 5 (semifinalists and winner of consolation) or 6, and you have traveled across the country, paid for hotel, and won 4 matches to get where you are, it would be nice to know that you at least got your entry fee back. So my point is that if the tournament did that for the quarterfinalists who lose, paying 4 more places, I think I would have no problem NOT hedging at that point and I would have no problem telling my opponent that I prefer not to hedge.
What I really enjoy is hearing people who want to hedge explain why they should get more because they are a better player...I had someone tell me they wanted to hedge but they should get 60/40, and I said I thought that was pretty fair and would do it, but they would also have to give me a good sized side bet on the match, giving me 60/40 odds, as that way they are putting their money where their mouth is. When they refused, I said I would take 55/45 and they still refused.
I do believe their should be a "rule" that if any two people hedge they must put it in writing and give the document to the tournament director before the match starts.
