Steve: I am dubious about whether it's a good idea for a director to take an equity stake in one of the players. The question has been raised before in the context of directors bidding in the Calcutta. Probably it's no big deal in a side event but it's something to be careful of.

Imagine if a controversial ruling occurs involving a player who is owned by the director, or if a player who has already had a frustrating weekend gets knocked out by a player who wouldn't have even rebought if the director hadn't cut a deal with him. What was intended purely as a nice gesture may end up causing disharmony rather than harmony.

I, myself would not worry about causing disharmony by making the nice gesture and offering to help someone re-buy and/or buying them in the calcutta. If for some reason someone questioned my ruling they can always ask for a comittee.
