In the first position I was more worried about getting another checker sent back than about escaping the one that was already back. A case of inverted priorities.

In the second position stacking up on the 3 point just seemed too ugly and inflexible, and I played 7/3 23/22. Evidently all the extra pointing rolls aren't worth it. I neglected to roll out Chuck's suggestion of breaking the 15 point. I will try that, although it doesn't look so good on evaluation.
