Apart from the 'better long term safety' by playing 5/4,5/1 you significantly reduce the chance that your opponent will send back 2 checkers of yours (don't forget that right now he has his 4-point open and having just one checker back is not lethal).

Bill Robertie in one of his books (501 BG problems?) points out the importance to clear the 5-point when your opponent holds your 1-point.
