You really don't want to get backgammoned at the score. My play is 24/23 8/4. Your timing is suspect, as you note, and the 2-3 backgame will have much better timing because it will generate shots earlier (White won't kill 6s, for example), and because your ace point is blocked 6 away but the deuce point is not. I'm not particularly concerned about not having the spare 6 away. Blue is a favorite to roll an ace or a deuce on any given roll, and sometimes he'll roll 16, 25, or 26 anyway. White may not make his 8 point, but he's already got the bar.

At DMP, I could be talked into your play, but I'd prefer 8/7*/3 which doesn't go past the 3 point. 23/22 8/4 would also be a consideration. But when White can win a backgammon, I don't want 15 blots in his home board.
