chess players have become familiar with the chess openings --- with strange names such as "ruy lopez". the only way this helps is for those studying the game to understand what the writer is talking about.

it doesn't take up too much time to get the basics down, but past that even the nactation experts disagree on the best symbols. my advice is to get familiar with the basics and leave the rest to the pros.
