While I like nactation, to be fair to those who don't, it may be just your increased effort to study backgammon, and the high quality of Nack and Paul's book, that has improved your game, and not nactation per se. After all, the book doesn't use nactation in quite the same was as it's used on this website, and "23-split" for example is easier to parse than "32Z."
