I also played this out a number of times, but I think now the best you can is just to hit both. Not hitting leaves a large number of difficult decisions whether or not to hit down the line. I think you need to accept that the timing cannot really be destroyed (because it is possible to adjust the defensive posture on the basis of the timing available), but that hitting likely will increase gammon wins.
