In Response To: Fifth or sixth? Issue of terminology (mtuhtan)

Shortest legal sequence is 31P-41S-44K-64<-C

1O ' ' ' '5X '3X1O ' '5O

1X2O '1X2O2O '2O ' ' '4X

Matt's best-play sequence is 41S-44K-54>31P-F-C

"...[Matt's] sequence is not exactly right."

By that I assume you mean it's not the sequence that happened in the game.

Anyway, sorry about my obtuseness; I copied the sequence from Matt's post header without thinking. It should have occurred to me to look for alternate legal sequences (which are obvious). Then I would have asked you which of the possibilities actually occurred before raising the xth-roll topic.

I may as well point out that in your shorter sequence 31P-41S-44K-64<-C, the 44K play (24/16* 6/2*(2)) is an eval error (sez Snowie -.025 and Gnu -.001), and should (according to eval) be played as 44D (24/16* 13/9(2)). Reference diagram below. Matt's sequence 41S-44K-54>-31P-F-C (though one roll longer) is the shortest sequence which is clearly played properly for both sides.

2O ' ' ' '5X '3X1X ' '5O

1X1X ' '2O4O '2O ' ' '4X

31P-41S-44: Hitting twice is an (eval) error

That aside, I'm relieved that we (and evidently others) agree on the issue of terminology. This became a minor bone of contention for me years ago when someone I communicated with on a regular basis referred to 51S-66B-662-cub or 41S-55A-fan-cub, and such, as "third roll cube decisions" (i.e., situations that you and I call "fourth roll cube decisions").
