Thanks Timothy for the addendum, it makes the general picture clearer to me.

I am trying to get some layman grasp of those notions since I know (well, have once known) the information-theoretic part of them, but statistics has never been my pet branch of mathematics. Is there more I should know about the place of polynomial-time complexity in statistics ? I am trying to understand the modern versions of Occam's razor, like for instance the minimum description length principle.

A short answer or just with pointers is fine, I am not asking you for a complete crash course in statistics !
