Riviera Cup/Cannes Cancelled

Eric "Late bookings are BG TD's nightmare, as they cannot plan an event properly in advance, while being blind to the number of participants. I do believe that BG community together could be able to come out with a better system, and keep decent turn-outs, but unfortunately, the past 18 months show a different trend. Global crisis? Poker shift? Last year issues still echoing? In any case, I am not keen to run an event for 30 local players and spend considerable efforts and money to do so."
I reply.. yes there certainly may be some issues in some players' minds with Cannes from last year. I was glad to see that your T was going to be held at a hotel casino so players could stay at the venue where the BG play is. While some of the lack of entries may be due to poker and also the economy, perhaps they are also due to the new "cash play" format.
Forgive me but when I read about the format, I quickly realized that I had ABSOLUTELY NO interest in playing that format. Out of respect for you and your long and tireless efforts promoting our game, I didn't say anything at that time against your format (if I recall).
As for the Nations Cup, it seems that you've properly learned how to fairly advance two teams from a bracket of four. However, I do wonder why each round starts with doubles and then has singles. Better to start with two 9 pt singles and then if both are won, a 7 pt doubles match isn't needed but if each team wins singles then a 7 pt doubles match can break the tie (note the length of the matches I propose).
Please forgive me if I have offended anyone here, but I STRONGLY feel that some of the "new" formats I am seeing are NOT good for the growth of BG or the preservation of what little we still retain. The time to try a "new" format is for a smaller event that costs much less to enter and doesn't have players travelling from all over the globe to play. When players don't understand a format, find it confusing or even have doubts, some of them decide to not play.
Just my opinions from over 3 decades of experience .. neilkaz ..
