Late Entry's

Chess tournaments still have the split entry fees. Backgammon frequently has them too. The problem with Backgammon has been that the higher late fees are often waived. Players walk in late and insist on getting the reduced fees. More often than not, they get their way. This system would work better if the late fees were commonly enforced.
I have had to cancel attendence at two Chess tournaments recently for medical reasons. Both refunded my money after deducting a processing charge. I think this makes a lot of sense. This is also something which could be considered for Backgammon. In particular, it makes sense for events which fill.
I think that one of the differences betweeen Chess and Backgammon is that Chess players are focused on the game. To a greater degree, Backgammon players are focused on the financial equity. They are generally unwilling to pay a late fee because it changes the equity. This makes it a lot tougher to enforce the higher charge. Lack of advance registration can contribute to various problems as was seen in this recent tournament cancellation.
