That's a NEXT... or is it?

Bar/18 is the play that jumps out at me, but bar/24 13/7 needs to be considered. We need to get both checkers home, and it's tempting to think that by getting one checker home, we've solved half of our problem for sure. However, this is usually not the right way to think about double-scramble positions; we have to look at the play that is best overall. The trouble with bar/24 13/7 is that it becomes difficult to extricate the back checker. It is partially primed and White now has full control of the outfield, with more soldiers about to spring out to provide further coverage. By playing bar/18 it's true we're more likely to get hit, but typically we will have good return shots. For example, imagine we play bar/18 and White rolls 2-1 and hits us with 10/7*. We now have a direct shot at the 5 from the bar plus a few indirect shots at White's other blots. Getting out into the outfield hassles White and prevents White from gaining control without a fight. I play bar/18.
