If your backgammon playing time has been equally spread over 35 years, and the opening 32Z "fad" was as short as say 3.5 years, that means it was played against you only one time in 100 during that period. I suspect you're underestimating (like how people underestimate the frequency with which they see extra points missed in football), though of course you would know if it was one time in 10, as I believe it was with me (though of course it might be me that's overestimating). The difference is likely the specific circles in which we played.
