"I had been wondering for some time what my opponent's pip count was when he had all fifteen on the roof and now I know."
That would be 15 X 25. If you notice that one number is 5 lower than 20 and the other is 5 greater than 20 you should be able to see the relevance of the identity (x+y)(x-y) = x^2 - y^2 and can calculate perhaps more quickly as 25 x 15 = (20 + 5)(20-5) = 20^2 - 5^2 = 400 - 25 = 375.
