Your "What!?" suggests that the bot likes 21/10. If so, I won't claim to be able to explain that play fully, but one important thing to note is that almost all of Black's 6's play well anyway, so giving Black a chance to break anchor to hit you with a 6 is not as big of a concession as it seems at first glance.

Certainly running with 24/13 looks like the wrong idea here. You're behind in the race with a stronger board and so you want to maintain contact and hit a shot, not run.

There are various ways to play checkers from the 13 point and/or the 11 point but they all seem slightly awkward so that's another thing to consider when weighing them against the flexible 21/10.
