In Response To: 21S-21S-32U-11e-65R-65? What!? (Tad Bright)

"21S-21S-32U-11e-65R-65"

In this post, I'll address the Nactation of the sequence. I made three changes:

Comments are below the diagrams.

For the U/V family (which is U, V, u, v, in expanded form), moving the lead checker always takes precedence over moving a trailing checker. Here, therefore, with a roll of 32, U = 23/18, V = 23/20 24/22, and u = 24/21 23/21.

So, strictly speaking, "u" rather than "U" is correct. It's such a clear play that it is unlikely someone will take U literally, but "u" removes all possible ambiguity.

A great symbol to use for this situation, though, is "@" for anchor (not yet in the tutorial). Perhaps you've seen it used at this forum, not knowing what it means. Now you do!

An "E" (Each inner board) play moves a back checker/s for half the play, and for the other half of the play it moves checker/s in one's own inner board. And, as with most characters (with the exception of U/V), making a point takes preference over sliding a blot or blots.

So, from the starting position of your checkers (e.g., in reply to an opening 31), 11E is 24/23(2) 6/5(2), and 11e is 24/22 6/5(2).

In the position above, you cannot make a far side point with half your play (i.e., with two aces). But you still have to distinguish between 23/21 and 24/22. You break the tie in the same way you would with U/V or R/r or with the closest-to-6pt convention. The leading checker gets the primary (capital) letter and the trailing checker gets the secondary (lower case) letter.

In short, 11E is 23/21 6/5(2) (as played in your game sequence) and 11e is 24/22 6/5(2).

Here, R means 21/10, and r means 21/15 21/16. For the actual play made, 13/2, I recommend "2" for 2pt, or the appropriate member of the $ or O family.

Btw, $ (Slot, 13/8 11/5) looks like the best play for White's 65. Given that she has to leave 17 shots anyway, she may as well leave 4 additional shots and try to make a much better point.

Hope that helps.
