The general answer to your question is to study lots of examples of the types of positions that give you trouble. Woolsey and Heinrich's book New Ideas in Backgammon has a chapter devoted to pay now/later problems. If you don't already have this book, it's a must-read if you want to ascend from intermediate to advanced/expert level.
