I think the comparison between the blot on the 2 and spare on the 3 is interesting. With the blot on the 2, stepping up means very often being on the bar again a 4 or 4.5 point board; with the spare on the 3, stepping up is a lot safer.

And you are right, strategically you'd like to escape the back checker and play with 15 against 1.
