One thing in these sorts of positions is to recognize that the intermediate point (the 8 point in this case) is both an asset and a liability. It is a "stepping stone" but it is also a point that you need to clear. The value of clearing the point (as well as, in this case, leaving a larger number of spares on the remaining points) has to be weighed against the value of clearing the rearmost points first. Especially when the points to be cleared are not contiguous, you can't always count on being able to clear points in the order you want to.

A further complication that can arise is illustrated by the variant position I posted. There, timing considerations increase the value of keeping the 8 point intact.
