In Response To: Rules question to try to answer what to do OTB (neilkaz)

We all know the players are expected to agree on the score between each game. If your opponent thinks he is leading 6-1, but he is actually leading 7-1, I believe you have an obligation to correct him in between games, even if he doesn't ask you or attempt to confirm the score himself. I'm not sure there would be universal agreement on that point, but I don't believe you are allowed to sit there silently if you know the opponent is under a mistaken belief as to the score.

I bring this up because I think it is related to the issue of a discrepancy in the match length, although it's not the exact same issue. Obviously if I am playing Neil he might say "7-1, right?" in between games and I will respond "yes." No one ever says "7-1 in a 9-point match, right?" but you could argue that the match length is implicitly a part of the score. I would put that metaphysical debate to one side and simply opine that if you know, in between games, that your opponent is under a misapprehension as to the length of the match, I believe you have an affirmative obligation to set him straight.

If you sat down at the beginning of the match and your opponent wrote "17" on his scoresheet even though you know the match is to 9, I don't believe it would be proper to say nothing and let him play the whole match under a mistaken belief. Now let's say he writes "17" but you don't notice it until a game or two has been played. I think you are still under the same obligation to correct him.

To answer Neil's question, then, I think the appropriate thing for Stick to do (if he wants to pass this cube) is to pass and then correct the opponent's misunderstanding as to the match length. This means that you never have to get into the arguably trickier issue of what to do if your opponent recubes to 4 in a later game (while only needing 2).

On that note, I don't think a player should be permitted to give a dead cube (just as I think a cube in the Crawford game should be null and void), but I don't know what the letter of the rules says about this (and the rules may be different internationally). I had the situation come up in a club match and I simply didn't allow the opponent to cube; in a major tournament I'd probably ask for a ruling.
