52S-xxx-65?

In Response To: 52S-xxx-65? (Timothy Chow)

Suppose I open with 24/22 13/8 and my opponent plays something that gives me a choice between playing 22/11 and 23/18 on my next turn. My impression is that 22/11 is usually the right play. Any exceptions? 52S-31P-65 or 52S-51S-65 perhaps? Before rolling these out myself I thought I'd check to see if someone else has already done so.

(I assume you mean 23/13, not "23/18".)

It seems I have no 52S-xxx-65 rollouts other than a trunc of 52S-51S-65 [R r1]. (I think I had more prior to a crash several years ago.) Possibly Paul Weaver can dig up something -- he has done a lot of good early game work on 65.

If an Opp back checker has split with a 4 or has run with an 8 or 9, then r beats R, to avoid leaving a direct shot. Aside from such obvious exceptions, I think when Opp's back checkers are split with a 1 or 3 the decision is close, and otherwise R (Run, 22/11) beats r (run, 24/13).

When xxx is 31P or 42P, I believe the decision is close. The stronger Opp's prime, the more incentive there is to launch the remaining back checker. For a clearer example, see 31P-52S-65R-53P-114-65.

I mentioned 1 and 3 splits. I think xxx replies of 51S, 21S and 32S (where 65r might win), are worth rolling out.

Hope that helps.

Nack
