No doubt MC has some very very strong players, but in my opinion it needs to change location and dates to become (more) relevant. How many registered for the Championship? 158? Over 20% down on last year and the lowest ever figure according to my research. Give it a year or two and there will be more people playing the $50,000 Player's Championship at the WSOP than playing the Monte Carlo Backgammon World Championship. It's only been 15 years since MC consistently attracted more players than the WSOP Main Event. And speaking of poker, I'm sure there are a few poker and backgammon players that can't be in two places at once. Poker will cope, but will backgammon? How relevant will MC be in two or three years, even given the history, if Championship numbers drop below 100?
