In my opinion internet backgammon is basically dead - there are too many cheats, or used to be when I tried - with the age of the bots especially Snowie and Extreme now it's even easier to cheat. Not to mention collusion, and having people sitting with you discussing plays.

Then there are the rakes - I see a purpose if strong players want to meet and play practise matches - well you can use FIBS for that! In fact the only tournaments I trust are organized on FIBS.

Let's say there were no cheats - then an honest player will see the same super strong professional logged on all the time, and have zero chance to beat him head to head, and little chance to win tournaments. Unlike poker there are not as many players to make internet backgammon interesting and I don't think there ever will be.
