Robertie does have a comment along your lines in his "501" book. It's a plausible argument but it has to be weighed against other factors.

Note also that there's a big difference between making the 3 point with a 53 roll as opposed to with a 55 roll, because of the difference in the race. For example, compare 31P-53P-65? and 31P-55P-65? In the former case the obvious 65R (24/13) is correct but in the latter case you should not run because you're so far behind in the race, and you should play 65D (13/8 13/7) in an attempt to prime. Anyway, just wanted to point out that a variety of factors have to be considered when weighing one play against another.
