I can't disagree with much that you've said.
However, I will note that the vast majority of the poker crowd is also not the elite of society. Doubt that many of them are staying/dining at the Bellagio.
Mass marketing and appeal, and television are the keys. Figure how to do that and a director will succeed famously.
The "World Championship" of Backgammon would do much better were it not in one of the most expensive cities in the world. Nor in a hotel where a room is $500/night and a burger lunch can set you back $50.
If you want mass appeal and large attendance you have to address the average folks. As in Vegas, have the event at a nice playing venue and have reasonable room rates available, those that wish to upgrade to Bellario, Wynn, Venetian, etc. can do so.
